Dynamics of China-Syria relations in the context of global geopolitical transformations

In an era of rapid geopolitical changes, the China-Syria relationship emerges as a notable example in the evolving landscape of global relations. The article explores Syria's importance as a crucial political and trading partner for China in the Middle East and as a strategic point of access to the Mediterranean. It also delves into Syria's critical role in China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and its status as a major logistical hub. Furthermore, it considers how Syria can facilitate the expansion of the Chinese economy while promoting its economic revitalization, particularly in sectors such as infrastructure, telecommunications, and energy, in line with both countries' strategic policies of 'Look East' (Syria) and 'Look West' (China) within Syria's broader four-seas strategy. The study looks into China's role in the 2011 Syrian conflict, including mediation efforts, humanitarian aid to Damascus, and intentions to contribute to the country's reconstruction programs through the BRI. It also sheds light on how the recent fall of Bashar al-Assad in Syria in 2024 could impact the dynamics of the China-Syria relationship. The study outlines the political and economic dynamics of China-Syria relations, as well as the challenges associated with BRI implementation. This study comprehensively investigates the diplomatic, economic, and strategic exchanges between Beijing and Damascus while exploring the factors that influence their bilateral ties. It also explores the prospects of these relations in the context of global changes and offers recommendations after critically evaluating the historical development and current status. The study aims at providing insights into the evolving nature of China-Syria relations by considering the interaction of domestic politics, regional developments, and international dynamics.
