Teaching environmental acoustics: bridging theory and practice
This article explores an approach to teaching environmental acoustics to a class of technical building construction students integrated with high school education at the Federal Institute of Education, Science, and Technology of São Paulo. Acknowledging the importance of environmental acoustics in both educational and technical contexts, the study combined theoretical and practical lessons to create a more effective and meaningful learning experience. The qualitative data analysis assessed students' understanding of the concepts and their ability to apply the acquired knowledge in practice. The results revealed significant assimilation of environmental acoustics concepts, including their relationship with environmental comfort and sustainability. The methodological approach also encouraged students to develop a critical and scientific perspective, strengthening the connection between theory and practice. In addition to fostering meaningful learning, this approach proved capable of stimulating citizen science, enhancing the understanding of acoustics as a vital tool for improving quality of life in buildings and urban spaces. This methodology is believed to serve as a reference for integrating environmental acoustics into technical education, broadening its pedagogical and practical applications.
