Simple identification method of wind noise using wind speed difference generated inside wind screen

We devised a method for monitoring low-frequency sound which can identify wind noise and estimate the direction of the sound source. It is well known that measuring low-frequency sound outdoors can be difficult, as wind noise may interfere with the data. Therefore, we developed two different identification methods and produced prototypes to verify their performance. In the first method, we placed two microphones in a two-stage cylindrical wind screen with different diameters. This device can automatically identify wind noise by using the differences in wind speed within the wind screen. However, since this device consists of only two microphones, it cannot identify the direction of the sound source. In the other method, we placed three microphones in a single-stage cylindrical wind screen. This device can not only identify wind noise but also estimate the direction of the sound source. In this report, we introduce the mechanisms of both methods and present examples of actual monitoring measurements.
