THE IMPACT OF ACOUSTICS AND OTHER ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS ON ELDERLY LEARNERS' PERCEPTION OF LEARNING SPACES: A CASE STUDY OF COMMUNITY UNIVERSITY OF THE THIRD AGE (CU3A) IN SHENZHEN, CHINA
With China's rapid population aging, the demand for lifelong learning among older adults has risen, yet suitable educational facilities remain insufficient. This study investigates how acoustic and other environmental factors influence elderly learners' perceptions and satisfaction in Shenzhen's Community Universities of the Third Age (CU3A). Field studies across four campuses collected measurements of noise levels (A-weighted), illuminance, operative temperature, and humidity, combined with questionnaire surveys. Results indicate that most CU3A facilities in Shenzhen fail to meet current standards for acoustic, lighting, and thermal environments. Elderly participants reported low overall satisfaction, with the acoustic environment exerting the strongest influence on perception. Perceived clarity of instructors' voices critically impacted both acoustic and overall satisfaction-difficulties in voice perception directly correlated with reduced satisfaction. This study highlights the necessity of optimizing key environmental elements, particularly acoustic design, to enhance elderly learners' experiences. The findings provide theoretical and practical guidance for improving CU3A facilities, advocating for age-sensitive environmental adaptations to foster inclusive lifelong learning environments.
