Influence on acoustical parameters with changing the quintet performer's position on stage
The acoustic characteristics of a stage significantly influence both performers and the audience. Furthermore, these characteristics provide crucial feedback for music hall design and the optimal arrangement of performers on stage. Our previous studies verified how inter-performer distances impact performers' auditory perception and identified an optimal distance for performers in a string quintet. As a further step, this study aims to investigate the effects of different performer distances on the acoustic properties experienced by individual performers using a sound ray tracing method. Additionally, we examined how reverberation times, adjusted by changing reflective surfaces in a concert hall, influence interactions among performers. As a result, correlations between performer distance and the acoustic characteristics experienced by each performer were identified, including significant variations in Early Decay Time (EDT) and Clarity (C80) values across different reverberation times. Future research will explore concert halls of various shapes and sizes and conduct more detailed evaluations of performers' perceptual responses. These efforts are expected to deepen our understanding of how changes in performer distance influence acoustic characteristics and perceptual experiences, taking into account the acoustic characteristics of the music hall.
