Noise map in the central area Aracaju - Brazil: analysis of the communities exposed to noise

The expansion of the urban fabric and the increase of both population density and vehicle usage have intensified noise pollution, resulting in psychoacoustic and hearing issues among local communities. For environmental noise management, noise mapping can be a helpful tool in aiding spatial planning and zoning. This article analyzes the use of acoustic mapping to assess the communities exposed to the noise of central Aracaju, Sergipe, Brazil. Traffic and noise data from different road types was collected, and noise maps were drawn up using Cadna-A software. An alternative methodological approach for the spatial distribution of the collected demographics is presented, using QGis to estimate the percentage of people exposed to high noise levels and analyzing conflict maps. The evidence showed that all readings registered noise levels above the legal limit (LAeq = from 61 to 75dB), with light-duty vehicles being the main source of noise pollution. In addition, 26% of the population is exposed to up to 5dB above the permitted level (60dB), 12% is exposed from 5 to 10dB above that same level, and 4% is exposed to over 10dB. Based on local urban mobility plans, a list of noise mitigation strategies was compiled to better manage traffic noise.
