Vehicular Traffic Noise Mapping in Arapiraca, AL, Brazil: An Analysis of the Itapoã Neighborhood
The rise in high-rise buildings, soil sealing, the reduction of green areas, and increased vehicular traffic are key factors contributing to the deterioration of environmental comfort in urban areas. Traffic noise is recognized as the primary pollutant affecting the acoustic environment, with noise mapping serving as a crucial tool for its assessment and mitigation. This study aims to develop a traffic noise map for Itapoã neighborhood in Arapiraca, AL, Brazil. The methodological approach consists of four stages: (1) data collection, (2) monitoring of sound pressure levels, (3) development of the traffic noise map, and (4) analysis of results. The findings reveal critical issues in the study area, including narrow streets with high vehicular flow and the exposure of sensitive buildings, such as schools, hospitals, and churches, to elevated noise levels. It is expected to support the implementation of urban sound planning strategies, providing foundation for future interventions in the city.
