Affected Population Under Airport Noise Contour Curves - Comparison of Different Procedures Over Densely Populated Areas in the City of São Paulo
Every environmental noise impact study around airports has the population density as a critical issue. Although modern aircraft have significantly reduced noise levels through different methods, the impact of aircraft noise on populations below flight paths remains a concerning issue. The state of São Paulo has some of the most densely populated cities in Brazil, reflecting the state's rapid economic growth and lack of urban planning. In early 2021, a new set of operational procedures was implemented: the so-called TMA-SP Neo. The new rules aimed at the optimization of the airspace and fuel burn reductions but did not consider the noise impact in the region and thousands of complaints were filed in 2021 and 2022. This paper presents a comparison of the population directly affected by aircraft noise before and after the implementation of TMA-SP Neo. The study is based on the population data from 2022's census and the ADS-B tracks available for January/March - 2018/19 and July/August - 2022/23.
