For patients on recombinant human growth hormone (r-hGH) therapy, the Growzen® digital ecosystem (the healthcare business of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany) was developed. This ecosystem includes electronic injection devices with adherence data transmitters and a platform for healthcare professionals (HCP) to monitor real-time patient adherence. Previous research shows that patient engagement with this ecosystem improves treatment outcomes. Our aim is to develop metrics to define HCP engagement using available information from the ecosystem. Data and Methods: Clinic-level elements from the Growzen® digital ecosystem were used to define metrics for HCP engagement. Results: Three metrics were defined: two for platform engagement (frequency of use and data entry) and one for treatment engagement. The first metric for platform engagement was frequency of use, which is the number of clinic connections by number of patients during a year; 365 * Total number of connections per clinic during a year divided by the number of treatment days over all patients per clinic during a year, further stratified by ≥1 (at least one connection/patient/year), >0-<1 (less than one connection/patient/year) and 0 (no connections). The second metric for platform engagement was data entry, which is the number of height data entries by number of patients during a year; Total number of height data entries per clinic during a year divided by the total number of patients per clinic during a year, further stratified by ≥1 (at least one measurement/patient/year), >0-<1 (less than one measurement/patient/year) and 0 (no measurements). The metric for treatment engagement is defined as the number of dose changes by number of patients during a year; Total number of dose changes per clinic during a year divided by the total number of patients per clinic during a year, further stratified by ≥2 (at least two dose changes/patient/year), ≥1-<2 (less than two and greater or equal to one dose changes/patient/year) and <1 (less than one dose change/patient/year). Conclusions: Our research developed metrics for measuring HCP engagement using elements from the Growzen® digital ecosystem. These metrics provide valuable insights into the level of HCP involvement within each clinic and can be useful in exploring the potential impact of HCP engagement on treatment outcomes.
