Application of metagenomic next-generation sequencing in the precise and rapid diagnosis of spinal infections
Compared to conventional microbial culture, mNGS demonstrates superior diagnostic performance in spinal infections, with significantly higher pathogen detection rates and enhanced sensitivity, accuracy PPV and NPV. mNGS exhibits significant advantages over culture in identifying both common pathogens and fastidious organisms, while also demonstrating robust fungal detection capabilities. Additionally, in tissue specimens, mNGS demonstrates relatively pronounced advantages compared to conventional microbial culture. For purulent specimen testing, comprehensive sensitivity and specificity in diagnosis can be achieved through a combined strategy of mNGS and microbial culture.
