Modeling the drivers of sustainable growth through Gandhian perspectives in industrial organization: a TISM approach

Purpose This research aims to explore the integration of Gandhian philosophy to foster competitive and sustainable management practices within the Indian manufacturing industry. In response to intensifying global competition, major manufacturing organizations are compelled to prioritize effective management strategies and sustainable business growth. By embracing indigenous philosophies, particularly Gandhian philosophy, this study seeks to establish a profound philosophical connection with the workforce and stakeholders, facilitating organizations to navigate through transitional phases and foster sustainable growth. Design/methodology/approach Employing a practical approach to Gandhian philosophy, the study utilizes the total interpretive structural modeling (TISM) technique to present a comprehensive framework. In total, 13 individual in-depth interviews and 4 focused group discussions with 10–12 participants in each focus group were conducted with industry experts on leadership in industrial organizations. These discussions revealed ten interrelated elements that impact the implementation of the Gandhian management perspective in industrial organizations. Findings The research explored key interdependent factors and developed a conceptual TISM-based framework showcasing the potential of Gandhian philosophy as a globally recognized method for achieving competitive and sustainable growth. By assimilating the principles, organizations can nurture leadership that aligns with sustainable growth objectives, thereby fostering coherence and relevance in management practices within industrial organizations. Practical implications The proposed framework, drawing insights from Gandhian philosophy, offers practical guidance to managers and leaders in the Indian manufacturing industry. It encourages the adoption of integrated management models that resonate with Gandhian values, promoting sustainable and socially responsible business practices. Originality/value Through a meticulous examination of the practical aspects of Gandhian philosophy, the research highlights its potential to augment leadership capabilities and gain competitive advantage.
