Integrated optoelectronic transceiver toward navigation grade fiber optic gyroscope using silicon photonics

In this work, we propose an integrated fiber optic gyroscope (FOG) transceiver by co-packaging the transimpedance amplifier (TIA) circuit with a silicon photonic FOG chip in an industry-standard 14-pin butterfly package. The transceiver combines optical functions (light source, polarizer, and photodetector) with low-noise current-to-voltage conversion in a single compact module. The output power exceeds ∼1.1 mW at 100 mA driving current. The preliminary closed-loop FOG test using a fiber coil (∼380 m length, ∼60 mm average diameter) demonstrated a 10 s Allan deviation of 0.092°/h. Linear fitting indicates angular random walk (ARW) of 0.00486°/h and bias instability (BI) of 0.0045°/h, satisfying the accuracy specifications for navigation grade FOG systems where BI less than 0.01°/h is required. Our work demonstrates a scalable approach to cost-efficient, miniaturized FOG production, addressing critical needs in aerospace, autonomous vehicle navigation, and industrial robotics applications.
