Main Service Properties of Carbon Aerogels Based on Resorcinol–Formaldehyde

Abstract—The influence of the solvent type (acetonitrile and dimethyl sulfoxide) and the solvent/resorcinol ratio on the physicochemical and service properties of carbon aerogels based on resorcinol–formaldehyde is studied. The specific surface area S, density ρ, porosity Π, and mechanical compressive characteristics (ultimate compressive strength $$\sigma _{{\text{u}}}^{{\text{c}}}$$ and maximum relative strain εc) are determined. The carbon aerogel prepared using dimethyl sulfoxide as the solvent at a solvent/resorcinol ratio of 8.8 mL/1.1 g is shown to have the most favorable complex of properties: $$\sigma _{{\text{u}}}^{{\text{c}}}$$ ≈ 159 MPa, εc ≈ 1.9%, S ≈ 710 m2/g, ρ ≈ 1.26 g/cm3, and Π ≈ 37%.
