Estimation of the Strength of Press-Fit Bearing Ring Joints Using Their Deformation Behavior during Loading

Abstract—The possibility of nondestructive testing of pressure-fit joints using strain gauging during mechanical tests has been substantiated. For a press-fit joint of a ring on a shaft, the static uncertainty of the problem of elastic stress distribution in the joint is demonstrated experimentally and by finite element modeling. The load-induced deformation nonlinearity effects and the level of residual strains related to the friction stresses at the joint interface are estimated. A method for estimating the strength of press-fit joints at an error of at most 10% has been proposed; it is based on determining the critical load (65% of the ultimate strength) at which the linearity of bearing ring deformation is violated.
