Experimental study on ultrasonic vibration assisted turning of Al-Mg alloy for aviation material

Al-Mg alloy plays an extremely important role in our daily life. It has the advantages of high strength, low density, and good heat dissipation, and is widely used in fields such as electronics, automobiles, and aerospace. However, some difficulties may arise during the processing, such as large cutting force, rapid tool wear, and difficulty in ensuring the quality of the processed surface. Therefore, starting from the principle of ultrasonic vibration-assisted turning, a set of ultrasonic vibration processing system was created. By using the method of comparison with conventional turning (CT), a comparative experiment of turning Al-Mg alloy was carried out. The results showed that: Compared with conventional turning, ultrasonic vibration-assisted turning (UAT) can effectively improve the surface morphology (SM) of the workpiece and reduce the surface roughness (SR). For radial ultrasonic vibration-assisted turning (R-UAT), the influence of cutting parameters on the cutting depth can be minimized as much as possible to obtain a better surface quality. For oblique ultrasonic vibration-assisted turning (O-UAT), due to the existence of axial amplitude, the influence of cutting parameters on the axial amplitude should be reduced. The chip morphology (CM) under conventional cutting are also more curled, and the edges will form serrated burrs. The research on radial and oblique ultrasonic vibration-assisted turning can provide valuable references for the future development of ultrasonic turning technology, and also help to effectively process other difficult to machine materials.
