Rare-Earth Metallic Chains on Silicon: Growth and Emergence of a Spin-Polarized 1D Channel

Integration of rare-earth (RE) metals into ultimately thin films gives rise to various fascinating effects, making them highly attractive for spintronics. While most of the research focuses on bulk phases and thick films, RE-based ultrathin films and 1D structures, in which quantum effects manifest in a more exotic manner, have not been sufficiently explored experimentally. We report on the epitaxial synthesis of the atomic-scale networks of nearly ideal 1D La and Ce chains. Using a number of experimental methods combined with first-principles calculations, we established a structural model and found that the chains have metallic character. The electronic spectrum of the Ce chain demonstrates giant magnetism-induced exchange splitting and the emergence of a spin-polarized 1D electron channel, which could allow the spin current regime to be achieved in the system. Since the fabricated atomic chains are seamlessly integrated with Si, they hold great potential for use in ultracompact spintronics.
