Factors Influencing the Implementation of Integrated Solid Waste Management Plans in Zimbabwe

Integrated Solid Waste Management is widely recognized as a sustainable framework for addressing municipal waste challenges. However, its implementation in Zimbabwe is hindered by fragmented policies, resource constraints and inconsistent stakeholder engagement. The study questions included, the primary factors driving the implementation of the integrated solid waste management plan in Zimbabwe? The major existing differences between factors and stakeholder perceptions in implementing the ISWMP? The relationship status between factors and stakeholder perceptions in the implementation of the ISWMP? Moreover, the objectives of this study sought to identify the factors affecting the successful implementation of the ISWM plan in Zimbabwe, to assess the current perceptions and attitudes of stakeholders regarding the ISWM plan and to further propose recommendations for improving the implementation and effectiveness of the ISWM plan in Zimbabwe. This study integrated quantitative techniques such as descriptive statistics, factor analysis, and ANOVA to investigate the barriers and drivers influencing ISWM. Data from 113 respondents, government officials, waste experts, and local residents, revealed significant factors such as community participation, organizational involvement, and motivation for sustainable practices. The results underscore the critical role of adaptable policies, robust community engagement, and economic incentives in fostering effective waste management. The novelty of the study provides an in-depth analysis specific to Zimbabwe, identifying specific factors that uniquely influence the implementation of solid waste management, which may differ from other countries or regions and further outlining actionable insights for policymakers and stakeholders, offering a roadmap to enhance ISWM implementation and advance sustainable waste management practices in Zimbabwe and be.
