Coupling Study on Water Resource Utilization Efficiency, Wastewater Generation and Carbon Footprints in Regional Economic System in China Based on Multivariate Statistical Analysis

At present, there is a significant deficiency in understanding the complex coupling among water resource utilization, wastewater production and carbon footprint (CFP) in regional economic systems in sustainable resource management. To explore the coupling of water resource utilization and CFP, the study first uses principal component analysis to identify the main components of water resources and carbon emissions used in urban economies. Apply these multivariate data to K-means clustering, and subsequently use the input-output model to quantify the interaction influence of multiple factors on the individual response variables. On detailed study of the input-output sectors, the coupling relationship between the utilization efficiency of water resources and CFP in the regional economy are deeply analyzed. The result demonstrates that the current regional economy exhibits low resource utilization efficiency in terms of water consumption, reduction of generation of wastewater and carbon emissions, especially in industries. This study highlights the urgent need to optimize resource management and promote industrial green transformation. The findings reveal that better coordination of water and carbon management can significantly enhance sustainability in high water consumption and high emission industries. Based on these findings, the study proposes some policy recommendations aimed at achieving sustainable regional economic development by optimizing water resource management and promoting low-carbon economic development. The outcome of the research fills the gap in the study of water-carbon-wastewater coupling in regional economies as well it provides feasible regional policy references for policymakers. This novel approach offers a comprehensive framework for integrating resource efficiency and emission reduction strategies in regional economic planning.
