Comparative analysis of sCVD and SiC detectors for neutron measurements in nuclear fusion

The relative neutron detection efficiencies of single-crystal chemical vapour deposition (sCVD) diamond and silicon carbide (SiC) detectors were investigated. Measurements were conducted at four neutron energies ranging from 2.45 MeV to 3.95 MeV. The neutron detection efficiency of sCVD was found to be (3.07 ± 0.24) times higher compared to SiC. The corresponding cross-sections were evaluated and compared to 12 C(n,tot) to validate the neutron detection efficiencies. Additionally, an experimental validation of the detector thicknesses from proton recoils is presented, the ionisation energy of SiC was determined to be consistent with previously published values and the gamma background suppression capabilities of the detectors were investigated.
