Feasibility of whole-body vibration exercise and its immediate effect on executive and physical functions in older adults with probable mild cognitive impairment

Abstract Background Whole-body vibration (WBV) training may be an effective method for enhancing the physical and executive functions of older adults. However, its feasibility in community-dwelling aged 80 years and older with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) remains uncertain. Methods This is a single-group clinical trial with a pre-and post-intervention design to evaluate the feasibility of WBV training. The protocol consisted of five sets of 1-min isometric squats performed on a vertical vibration platform. The primary outcome was feasibility, while secondary outcomes included executive and physical function. Results Eighteen older adults (mean age: 84 ± 3 years) participated in the study. Only one participant was unable to complete the protocol, and three experienced dizziness during the familiarization phase. No other adverse events were reported, and the entire intervention lasted approximately 10 min, supporting its safety and feasibility. Preliminary results findings indicated improvements in executive and physical performance, as demonstrated by the motor dual-task test (p = 0.05) and the Trail Making Test Part A (p = 0.004). Conclusion Community-dwelling older adults aged 80 years and older with probable MCI can safely engage in WBV training, provided there are no contraindications to vibratory stimulation. Trial registration Name of the registry: Brazilian Clinical Trial Records—REBEC. Registration number: RBR-9sbdbg7. Date of registration: February, 10th, 2023. Scientific title: Immediate effect of Whole Body Vibration exercise on executive functions, physical functions, and neuroendocrine-inflammatory biomarkers of very older adults with Mild Cognitive Impairment: a feasibility study.
