Custom resin plates for TMJ pain relief in a compromised denture
This Technique Tip introduces a simplified technique for managing temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain caused by the loss of vertical dimension in patients with complete dentures. The method involves applying a composite material to the occlusal surface of an existing denture, followed by using a bite registration material to restore and register the vertical dimension. A heat-cured acrylic resin plate is then fabricated over the existing denture, providing an immediate, cost-effective and definitive solution to relieve TMJ pain without the need for remaking dentures. This approach, which is especially beneficial for elderly patients, minimizes treatment visits and enhances patient comfort. Regular follow-up appointments are recommended to monitor progress and ensure the longevity and effectiveness of the resin plate. CPD/Clinical Relevance: This technique offers a quick, cost-effective solution for managing TMJ pain in complete denture wearers by restoring vertical dimension without the need for new denture fabrication.
