Rehabilitation of an edentulous patient with a severely resorbed ridge using the piezography technique: a case report

This clinical case report is the winning entry for the Dental Update Undergraduate Writing Competition 2025 and describes the successful management of a patient with severe mandibular ridge atrophy using the piezography technique for complete denture construction. The patient presented with longstanding edentulism, significant resorption of the mandibular ridge, xerostomia and a history of unsuccessful prostheses owing to instability, discomfort and parafunction. A muscle-guided neutral zone approach was employed to record the dynamic function of the orofacial musculature during speech and swallowing. The resulting dentures demonstrated improved retention, stability, aesthetics and patient satisfaction. This case highlights the effectiveness of piezography in managing complex edentulous cases where conventional methods have previously failed. CPD/Clinical Relevance: In cases of severe mandibular atrophy, piezography offers a functional approach to complete denture fabrication, providing improved denture stability and comfort.
