Natural Mogroside Additive Enabling Stable Zinc Anodes Through Solvation and Hydrogen Bond Network Regulation

Aqueous zinc ion batteries are hampered by dendrite growth and side reactions. In this paper, the additives of mogroside are introduced into the ZnSO4 electrolyte. The hydrogen bond network is reconstructed by forming hydrogen bonds between hydroxyl groups in mogroside and water molecules, which effectively regulates the solvation structure of zinc ions. Furthermore, mogroside molecules tend to be preferentially attached to the surface of the zinc anode, resulting in the formation of a durable protective layer, which effectively inhibits water-triggered hydrogen generation, erosion, and other parasitic reactions. Zn||Zn-symmetrical batteries containing mogroside additives achieve a cycle life of 1600 h at 1 mA cm-2 and 1 mAh cm-2. Meanwhile, the Zn-V6O13 battery retains 83.9% of its capacity after 2000 cycles at a current rate of 5 A g-1. This study demonstrates the potential of mogroside as an electrolyte additive and provides a new way to enhance the performance of zinc-ion batteries.
