Utilization of Black Cotton Soil in Geosynthetic Clay Liner: A Sustainable Approach
ABSTRACT The integration of Black Cotton Soil (BCS) in the composition of Geosynthetic Clay Liners (GCLs) presents a promising avenue for sustainable Geotechnical Engineering. BCS, characterized by its high Montmorillonite content, expansive nature, and significant Shrink‐Swell behavior, poses challenges for conventional construction practices. However, these same properties can be harnessed advantageously in GCL used for environmental containment systems. In this study, the Sodium Bentonite is replaced by BCS. This study explores the feasibility and performance of BCS as a core component in GCL. Laboratory experiments were conducted to assess the basic properties, Hydraulic conductivity, swelling potential, and mechanical stability of GCLs incorporating BCS. Comparative analysis with standard bentonite‐based GCL is also performed.
