Gentamicin-induced Hypersensitivity Observed in Patients Who Underwent Cesarean Section – A Case Series of Three Patients
Abstract Gentamicin which is a bactericidal antibiotic belonging to the aminoglycoside class is used to treat bacterial infections mainly caused by Gram-negative bacteria. The major concern with the use of gentamicin is ototoxicity in the form of vestibular toxicity, nephrotoxicity, and neuromuscular blockade. In this case series, hypersensitivity reactions were presented in three patients with symptoms ranging from breathlessness to anaphylactic shock who were administered injection gentamicin for cesarean section (C-section) chemoprophylaxis in the department of obstetrics and gynecology of a tertiary care hospital. Hypersensitivity associated with gentamicin is scarcely reported in literature warranting the need to report these cases as well.
