Delayed Complications after Therapeutic Plasma Exchange at 1 Week

Abstract Introduction: The goal of therapeutic apheresis is to remove a pathologic element from blood or to modulate cellular function. Complications were observed at 1 week, after complete the therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) procedure with respect to patients’ demographic profiles and procedural variations. Materials and Methodology: This is a one-year prospective observational study that included all the patients who required TPE as part of their management. In this we observed complications at 1 week, after the TPE procedure with respect to patients’ demographic profiles and procedural variations. A total 150 TPE cycles were done on 60 patients and observed complications at different time period like, during, after and at 1 week after TPE. Results: Complications observed during the TPE, and fewer complications were observed after the procedure. Very less complications were reported after 1 week of the procedure, only 54 patients, observed [04(07.41%)] abdominal discomfort, followed by bipedal edema [08 (5.33%)]. Maximum mean age (32.50 ± 12.50) was observed for Abdominal Discomfort. Maximum mean BMI was observed for Abdominal Discomfort (34.61 ± 3.09). Maximum mean variation of Hct% was observed for Infection at Phlebotomy site (12.40 ± 0.00), followed by Abdominal discomfort (1.13 ± 4.60). Conclusion: We observed positive correlation between complications and S. Calcium ( r = 0.1388), S. LDH ( r = 0.2079), APTT ( r = 0.03542), S. Urea ( r = 0.2607), S. Creatinine ( r = 0.1444), Pulse ( r = 0.09421), SBP ( r = 0.159), DBP ( r = 0.1719) and SPO2 ( r = 0.1477). Most of the patients were cured and discharged after all the sessions of TPE only a few patients complained mild to moderate complications that are managed appropriately. Hence TPE was not directly responsible for long-term complications.
