Monoclinic ω-phase related Fe13Ga9 as precipitate in Fe-≈27 at%Ga Galfenol-type alloys

Diffraction data of Fe-≈27 at.%Ga Galfenol-type Fe−Ga alloys from the literature studied in view of their magnetostrictive properties have been re-evaluated. This shows that yet structurally incompletely diffraction phenomena can be attributed to occurrence of the metastable monoclinic Fe 13 Ga 9 phase as precipitates in a D0 3 -Fe 3 Ga matrix. The possible implications of occurrence of this phase for such low Ga contents are discussed in view of identification of other phases as L6 0 . Moreover, the vacancy content of the solid solution prior to precipitate formation is discussed, as well as the possible role of the vacancies ending up on the vacancy containing bcc-derivative Fe 13 Ga 9 phase for the magnetostriction phenomena. • Reevaluation of incompletely interpreted diffraction data from literature • Fe 13 Ga 9 intermediate develops in Fe-27at.%Ga alloy • role of this phase in view of magnetostriction in Galfenols is to be eludicated
