Flame Retardant Efficiency of Benzene vs Naphthalene Ligands in P–N Flame Retardants for Polylactic Acid

This study addresses the flammability issue of the biodegradable polyester polylactic acid (PLA) by proposing a supramolecular flame-retardant strategy. Leveraging the critical regulatory role of aromatic topology on molecular assembly and flame-retardant performance, two supramolecular flame retardants, HEMPD and HEDAN, were synthesized through hydrogen-bonding networks utilizing hydroxyethylidene diphosphonic acid (HEDP) with m-phenylenediamine (MPD) and 1,5-diaminonaphthalene (DAN), respectively. Comparative studies within PLA composites were conducted to systematically investigate the quantitative influence of aromatic structure on gas-phase/condensed-phase flame-retardant mechanisms and thermal stability. HEMPD and HEDAN achieved a UL-94 V-0 rating at additive loadings of 4 and 2 wt %, respectively. At a 4 wt % loading, both significantly enhanced the limiting oxygen index (LOI) of PLA from 19% to 24% (HEMPD) and 24.5% (HEDAN), while reducing the peak heat release rate (PHRR) by 14.94% and 11.98%, respectively. Consequently, the flame retardancy and thermal stability of PLA were markedly improved. This work provides the first mechanistic insight into the structure–property relationship between aromatic topology and the efficacy of supramolecular flame retardants, paving the way for achieving high-efficiency flame retardancy in biobased materials.
