A review on the use of steel fibers in concrete slab repair and recommendations for enhanced performance

This comprehensive review examines steel fiber applications in concrete slab repair, demonstrating significant performance improvements over conventional methods. Steel fiber incorporation achieves up to 51.7% enhancement in flexural strength, 14–24% improvement in splitting tensile strength, and superior crack control through effective load redistribution mechanisms. The review analyzes three primary fiber types (crimped, hooked-end, and straight), optimal dosages, and synergistic effects with supplementary additives including silica fume, polymers, and nano-materials. Key findings indicate that hooked-end fibers provide superior anchorage, while proper fiber distribution prevents segregation and ensures uniform reinforcement. Under extreme environmental conditions, steel fiber-reinforced repairs demonstrate enhanced durability and fatigue resistance compared to traditional cementitious materials. Critical recommendations include standardized testing protocols for performance evaluation, quality control measures during mixing and placement, and consideration of environmental sustainability through recycled fiber utilization. The review identifies optimal fiber dosages of 0.5-2.0% by volume for most repair applications, with higher concentrations beneficial for high-stress environments. These findings provide evidence-based guidance for engineers to optimize repair strategies, reduce long-term maintenance costs, and improve structural performance of deteriorated concrete slabs.
