The Role of Ayurveda in the Management of Tobacco Addiction in Adolescent

Abstract Tobacco consumption is a primary contributor to preventable mortality globally, particularly in developing nations. All forms of tobacco products are hazardous. This is particularly applicable to children, adolescents, and young adults. Tobacco products contain nicotine, a substance that is highly addictive and detrimental to the developing brain. In India, approximately 10% of adolescents aged 13–15 years have smoked cigarettes, with nearly half of these individuals reporting the onset of tobacco use before the age of 10 years. This study aims to elucidate various Ayurvedic principles applicable for the prevention and management of tobacco addiction and withdrawal in adolescents. Information about tobacco addiction, withdrawal, and treatment from both index and nonindex journals is included in this article. Analysis has been done on the Ayurvedic Samhitas and their commentary. A textbook on Ayurvedic and modern medicine was used to compile relevant literature. Ayurveda, a repository of numerous herbal formulations and methodologies, has proposed various strategies to prevent and manage symptoms associated with addictive substances. The procedures encompass the application of herbs, formulations, Padanshika krama (gradual adoption and cessation), and Panchakarma techniques. The integration of yoga and meditation, alongside awareness and counseling, offers effective methods for preventing and treating tobacco addiction in adolescents. Thus, the Ayurvedic single herb formulations, Panchakarma procedures, and Padanshika krama effectively alleviate the detrimental symptoms of tobacco withdrawal and addiction. Satvavajya chikitsa , Sadvritta , achara Rasayana , Yoga, and meditation are effective methods for overcoming tobacco addiction in adolescents.
