Comments on Choosing the Study Groups While Finding the Association of Vit D Levels and Hand Grip Strength among Patients with Diabetes

Dear Editor, We read with interest the original article, “Association of Vit D Levels and Hand Grip Strength among Patients with Diabetes: A Cross-Sectional Study Design” by Kumar et al.[1] published in March–April 2025 issue of the Medical Journal of Dr D Y Patil Vidyapeeth. Certain studies have reported positive outcomes of Vit D supplements on physical performance in elderly patients. Mendoza-Garces et al.[2] reported an association between low vit D levels (under 40 ng/mL) and reduced handgrip among elderly Mexican women with type II Diabetes Mellitus. In this study, researchers did not find a significant correlation between Vit D levels and handgrip strength in type II diabetes patients. We felt that as the sample size was small (100 patients), instead of taking such a wide range of age (57.66 ± 12.22 yrs), they would have chosen a narrow range of age, because as age advances in elderly people, muscle mass and strength go on decreasing very fast.[3] Physical strength in males is always more than that of females of the same age group, so they would have studied males and females in different groups.[4] Also, physical training and nutritional status will affect muscle strength, so they would have considered physical training and nutritional status of the patients to get better results of the study.[5] Author contribution ADD and SAS discussed and written the article; PJP reviewed the article.
