Hypofractionated Versus Conventional Fractionated Radiotherapy in Postmastectomy Patients: Analysis of the Quality of Life and Fatigue

A BSTRACT Context: In the overall management of breast cancer, radiotherapy plays a crucial role. Current conventional fractionated radiotherapy (CFRT) is 50 Gy fractionation divided into 25 fractions of 2 Gy over 5 weeks, once a day. Hypofractionated radiotherapy (HFRT) is 40 Gy in 15 fractions over 3 weeks can be another viable option. Aims: We aimed to compare the quality of life (QoL) and fatigue in patients receiving CFRT and HFRT. Methods: In this single-center prospective observational study, 60 patients were recruited (1:1) into two arms to receive CFRT or HFRT. Health-related QoL (FACT-B v4 questionnaire) and fatigue (FACIT-F questionnaire) were assessed by a blinded investigator and compared at the end of 4 weeks. Results: There were significant differences in the health-related QoL scores (FACT-B v4) and fatigue (FACIT-F) scores at baseline between the two arms. This difference persisted at the end of 4 weeks of treatment. However, the within-group changes post treatment were not significant as compared to the baseline. Conclusion: The QoL and fatigue scores were comparable between CFRT and HFRT arms. HFRT can be preferred as a routine treatment for postmastectomy breast cancer patients as a shorter radiotherapy schedule is convenient and economical.

Abstract

A BSTRACT Context: In the overall management of breast cancer, radiotherapy plays a crucial role. Current conventional fractionated radiotherapy (CFRT) is 50 Gy fractionation divided into 25 fractions of 2 Gy over 5 weeks, once a day. Hypofractionated radiotherapy (HFRT) is 40 Gy in 15 fractions over 3 weeks can be another viable option. Methods: In this single-center prospective observational study, 60 patients were recruited (1:1) into two arms to receive CFRT or HFRT.
