The Philosophical Significance of Douglas Adams’s Comic AI Characters
The wit with which Douglas Adams depicts his AI characters constitutes the opposite of “comic relief,” as it corresponds to philosophical assumptions found in misanthropic pessimism. This type of humor does not furnish us with any definitive answers to traditional philosophical conundrums, yet it may suggest novel and insightful avenues of theoretical inquiry. Adams’s science fiction parodies not only certain philosophical antinomies—while also satirizing philosophers who are solely focused on their financial interests—but also many of the genre’s outworn motifs and narrative traditions, thereby revitalizing both philosophy and sf and rendering them more relevant to a range of present-day sociocultural concerns.
