Transforming Pilgrimage into Prosperity: The Impact of Mahakal Lok on Tourism and Urban Development in Ujjain

The opening of the Mahakal Lok Corridor in 2022 has led to big changes in Ujjain, especially in tourism and local business. This study looks at how the development around the Mahakaleshwar Temple has increased the number of visitors and helped the city grow. With more tourists coming in, there has been a clear rise in hotels, restaurants, and homestays to meet the growing demand. Local food joints, guesthouses, and service providers have also seen a boost in income. We gathered information from 110 tourists and reviewed news reports and government data. The study found that how people travel and how long they stay affects their visit plans, while their choice of stay doesn’t change much. Most people visit Ujjain for a short stay, mainly for spiritual reasons and revisit for the same and short stay. The growing number of visitors has helped create more jobs and supported small businesses specially for namkeen shops, local cloth, prasad items, sweets and local transport in the city. Locals have taken an active role in keeping the area clean and welcoming. This shows how a spiritual project like Mahakal Lok can help a city grow by supporting tourism, improving the economy, and still keeping its religious and cultural values alive.
