What Is Voice?
Abstract: This article reconceptualizes the traditional five-part voice model—respiration, phonation, articulation, resonance, and registration—that prioritizes physiology and acoustics while insufficiently addressing the mental aspects of the voice. A newly proposed model reframes voice as a dynamic process involving intention, modulation of sound, and audience interpretation. By prioritizing perceptual and communicative outcomes over isolated tasks, this model attempts to bridge theoretical knowledge and artistic application, fostering individualized, empathetic teaching. It supports a holistic understanding of voice as a shared experience, encouraging teachers to cultivate artistry and expression, ultimately enhancing a singer’s ability to meaningfully connect with audiences.
