Breaking 50% Energy Loss Barrier in Polarized LEDs via Twisted Grating Metasurface Integration
Abstract High‐brightness, efficient, and polarized light‐emitting diodes (LEDs) are crucial for next‐generation display and communication technologies. Conventional strategies to generate polarized emission typically filter out the undesired polarization state by absorption or reflection, leading to substantial energy losses exceeding 50%. In this study, a GaN‐based LED integrated with a twisted grating metasurface (TGM) as an optical polarizer is presented. Simulations indicate that the TGM enhances TM‐polarized light transmission by a factor of 1.22 compared to the unpatterned GaN LED at a wavelength of 465 nm, with a predicted polarization extinction ratio (PER) of 7.5 dB. This enhancement stems from the TGM's strong asymmetric polarization rotation, which partially converts TE modes into TM modes while maintaining high TM‐mode transmission with minimal rotation into the TE channel. Experimentally, the TGM‐integrated LED achieves increased TM‐polarized photoluminescence (PL) and electroluminescence (EL) intensities by factors of 1.24 and 1.34, respectively, exceeding simulated predictions due to the additional contribution of the Purcell effect. Furthermore, the device exhibits a PER of 4.78 dB in PL and 3.75 dB in EL, marking a substantial improvement over conventional LEDs. These findings offer a promising approach for developing highly efficient, integrable polarized light sources for advanced photonic applications.
