Novel Durable Superhydrophobic Coatings With Silica Nanoparticles for Self‐Cleaning Performance of <scp>ABS</scp> Plastics
ABSTRACT Superhydrophobic coatings have gained considerable attention as a novel technology in various industries, especially in automotive, electronics, construction, and packaging sectors. The use of silica nanoparticles as an effective agent in the development of these coatings has flourished in recent decades. This study investigates the effect of superhydrophobic coatings containing silica nanoparticles on sanitary ABS plastic parts used in construction, including toilet tanks and soap dispenser parts. To enhance the hydrophobicity and self‐cleaning properties of these parts, superhydrophobic coatings with a contact angle above 151° and a surface roughness of 30 nm were applied. The AFM and FESEM analyses demonstrated effective dispersion of silica nanoparticles on the surface and appropriate penetration of the hydrophobic solution into the plastic structure. Furthermore, the water droplet impact, finger‐touch, and abrasion tests revealed that the coated parts retained their hydrophobic properties and exhibited good resistance. Finally, the self‐cleaning tests confirmed the coating's ability to effectively prevent adhesion of contaminants and dirt. In addition, colorimetric analysis showed that the coating had no significant effect on the color appearance of the ABS parts. This research highlights the high potential of silica nanoparticle coatings in improving the surface properties of ABS plastic parts for various industrial applications.
