Unravelling skin ageing: the intersection of biological processes and medical pathologies

The process of skin ageing is influenced by both intrinsic factors, such as genetic predisposition, and extrinsic factors, such as UV radiation, stress, and lifestyle choices. This paper explores whether skin ageing should be classified as a natural process or a disease process, with a focus on conditions such as solar elastosis and melasma. We examine the role of UV radiation in accelerating skin ageing and compare cases where ageing is mitigated by proper hydration, nutrition, and protection using case study examples. Additionally, we investigate the effects of stress and sleep deprivation on skin health, highlighting the importance of cortisol management and adequate sleep in maintaining youthful skin. The interrelation between gut health, hormonal changes, and skin ageing is also discussed. Furthermore, we introduce The Accelerated Skin Ageing Assessment Score (ASAAS), a comprehensive tool designed, for use by medical professionals, to evaluate the extent of accelerated ageing based on lifestyle, environmental, and medical factors. The ASAAS, when combined with a full medical assessment, supports clinical decision-making by distinguishing between the need for medical-based aesthetic treatments and purely cosmetic interventions. This paper underscores the necessity of a holistic approach in treating advanced signs of ageing, considering both medical conditions and lifestyle factors.
