Topical approaches to addressing tissue changes as a result of GLP-1RA and GIP therapies
The increasing use of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) therapies for diabetes and obesity management has led to new challenges in aesthetic medicine. While these treatments provide significant metabolic and cardiovascular benefits, patients are presenting with accelerated signs of skin ageing, including loss of facial volume, dermal thinning, and compromised barrier integrity. These changes are attributed to reduced subcutaneous white adipose tissue, altered adipose-derived stem cell activity, and potential loss of muscle mass. This paper explores the mechanisms by which GLP-1RA/ GIP therapies influence tissue quality and proposes targeted topical interventions to counteract these effects. Key regenerative approaches include bioactive peptides, amino acids, antioxidants, and advanced delivery technologies that restore dermal density, stimulate collagen production, and enhance skin barrier function. Supported by emerging case studies, these topical strategies demonstrate promising results in mitigating GLP-1RA/GIP-associated tissue changes and offer a novel adjunct to aesthetic treatment pathways.
