RESTORATION REPAIR OF A LOCAL ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE SITE (PROTECTION NUMBER 7267-KHA)

This article presents the results of a comprehensive study aimed at substantiating the necessity and determining the engineering and architectural solutions for the restoration and repair of a cultural heritage site of local significance – the "Gynecological Building" located in Kharkiv, Ukraine. Constructed in the late 19th century as part of the historic medical complex designed by A.K. Shpiegel, the building holds high historical and architectural value as part of the urban ensemble of the former University Clinics. The relevance of the research is determined by the unsatisfactory technical condition of the object after over a century of operation. The current state of the structural elements, roofing system, façade masonry, and decorative details indicates physical deterioration that threatens both the continued functional use of the building as a healthcare facility and the preservation of its cultural heritage features. The research includes field inspections, historical and architectural analysis, technical assessments of structural systems, and a review of regulatory and restoration standards. The project proposes a set of restoration and repair measures, including reinforcement of the wooden rafter system, installation of a new standing seam metal roof, insulation of the attic floor, restoration of the brick masonry and cornices, sealing of cracks using color-matched mortar, and cleaning of surfaces using sandblasting methods. Additional conservation works include the application of fire- and bio-resistant treatments for timber elements and anti-corrosion protection for metallic parts. Emphasis is placed on preserving the authentic style of the building, which is designed in the “brick style” with elements of late Art Nouveau. Special attention is paid to the integration of modern engineering technologies and materials while maintaining compliance with Ukrainian laws on cultural heritage preservation. The object belongs to the CC3 class of responsibility (significant consequences) in accordance with the national standard DSTU 8855:2019 due to its heritage status. The findings of this study are significant for professionals involved in the restoration of historic buildings, particularly those used for public or institutional purposes. The proposed methodology and technical approach can serve as a reference model for similar projects focused on balancing heritage preservation with structural safety and operational requirements in urban environments.
