An evaluation of the research methodology programme for MBBS undergraduates: Student-perceived abilities of research – A cross-sectional study

Abstract Background: Early introduction of research to the medical students will help them in better understanding of the concepts and is also associated with good research activities in future. Methods: This cross-sectional mixed-method study was conducted from February 2023 to May 2023 among the 151 Phase II MBBS students to evaluate the research methodology programme conducted by the department of community medicine. Retrospective pre–post feedback form was used to get the feedback from the students regarding the program. Focus group discussion (FGD) was conducted to assess the needs of the students in this programme and FGD was also conducted among the faculties to address the challenges faced by them during this program. Results: There was a significant improvement in the perceived abilities of the students after the research methodology programme ( P value < 0.05). More time for data collection, separate sessions for teaching the basic research-based computer knowledge and explaining the vocabulary to be used to communicate with the rural people were some of the needs of the students assessed by FGD. Time duration (less) of the program, single faculty managing the group, gaining the interest of the students and their active participation were some of the challenges faced by the faculties. Conclusions: Our observations provide insights into students’ perception about research, challenges faced by students as well as by the mentors.
