Potential Protective Effects of Ajwa Dates Against Tissue Damage: A Review of its Therapeutic Benefits

Introduction: Tissue damage can result from various harmful agents, including nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), environmental toxins, and radiation emitted by mobile phones. These factors contribute to oxidative stress, disrupting cellular integrity and function. Ajwa dates are rich in antioxidants, particularly flavonoids and phenolic compounds, which neutralize reactive oxygen species, inhibit inflammation, and enhance antioxidant enzyme activity, supporting cellular homeostasis. This review aimed to evaluate existing literature on the medicinal and therapeutic benefits of Ajwa dates in protecting organ tissues from toxic substances. Methods: A systematic literature review was conducted using databases (Google Scholar, PubMed, and Scopus). Articles published between 2013 and 2024 were selected using keywords "Ajwa date," "Ajwa date extract," "Phoenix dactylifera L.," "organ tissue repair," "organ damage," "toxicity," or "toxic effect". Included studies were those assessing Ajwa date treatments or derivatives' effects against tissue damage. Results: Numerous experimental studies have demonstrated Ajwa dates' ability to significantly reduce oxidative stress markers, inflammation, and tissue damage biomarkers in tissues exposed to harmful agents. Ajwa dates promoted organ tissue repair, regeneration, and improved histological integrity across various animal models of induced organ damage. Discussion: The findings underscore Ajwa dates’ potential protective role against organ tissue damage through their bioactive compounds’ interaction with oxidative stress and inflammatory pathways. However, studies included were primarily animal-based, indicating the need for human clinical trials to confirm these benefits. Conclusions: Ajwa dates demonstrate promising therapeutic potential in protecting tissues from damage caused by various toxic agents and could support the development of natural therapies for the prevention and treatment of oxidative stress-induced organ damage.
