Performance of mass flow over a co-flow jet airfoil for horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT) application

The objective of the proposed study is to analyze the performance effects of mass flow in the co-flow jet aerofoil for horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT) applications. The numerical study performed second-order discretization with a coupled solution scheme of k–[Formula: see text] SST turbulence model to calculate the aerodynamic and power parameters. The discussion reveals that the co-flow jet concept with 100% mass flow at both injection and suction provides remarkable performance compared to the other combinations of mass flow. The stall and lift coefficients were improved up to 43% and 56%, respectively and the power generation was also significantly high for the mass flow of 100%. The novelty of the proposed method is to predict the optimum mass flow for the HAWT aerofoil, along with the prediction of the power coefficient to enhance performance. The proposed method is used to provide guidance for improving the performance of existing and upcoming HAWTs.
