Design and Implementation of Lightweight Virtualized Firewalls for Industrial Cybersecurity and Medical Services

The accelerated implementation of Industrial IoT (IIoT) and automation systems has rendered industrial networks and medical services increasingly vulnerable to cyberattacks. These environments necessitate adaptable and effective security solutions capable of managing dynamic network conditions, real-time traffic, and resource limitations. The conventional approach of implementing security solutions on dedicated hardware is becoming impractical, particularly in medical environments undergoing a transition from traditional data rooms to virtualized and cloud-based infrastructures. This paper assesses the challenges associated with securing industrial and medical networks and the limitations of prevailing firewall architectures. It underscores the merits of containerized firewalls as a substitute for conventional approaches, emphasizing their lightweight virtualization, scalability, and adaptability. Furthermore, the study appraises the role of automated security policies for industrial and medical applications. A significant focus is put on performance and scalability, particularly in high-density, low-latency environments such as telemedicine platforms and online healthcare services. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of containerized firewalls in enhancing cybersecurity while maintaining efficiency and regulatory compliance for medical institutions.
