A Blockchain-Based Framework for Secure IoT Device Communication

Blockchain technology is a promising solution to enhance IoT security by providing decentralized authentication, data integrity, and tamper-resistant record-keeping. However, the computational and energy resources of Internet of Things (IoT) devices are often limited, making it necessary to use lightweight blockchain protocols and consensus mechanisms optimized for real-world implementations. This paper presents a lightweight blockchain framework designed as a secure middleware communication layer for the Internet of Things ecosystems, implemented through a custom C++ library. The modular architecture facilitates extensibility, allowing a future-proof system to be updated without completely restructuring the core blockchain mechanisms. The results indicate that the proposed solution is fast, modular, and lightweight, with features that are needed to comply with the primary constraints of IoT devices. The framework provides a decentralized and cryptographically secure approach to data communication, enabling secure device authentication and data integrity verification in resource-constrained environments.
