Edentulismo no Brasil: Determinantes socioculturais, informacionais e perspectivas futuras
Edentulism, characterized by the partial or total loss of teeth, remains a relevant public health issue in Brazil, affecting millions of individuals, especially adults and the elderly. Despite advances in public policies such as the “Brasil Sorridente” program, the number of edentulous people remains high, reflecting not only limitations in access to dental care but also cultural and educational factors deeply rooted in Brazilian society. The naturalization of tooth loss and the lack of proper information on preventive practices contribute to negligence regarding oral health. Furthermore, health education still plays a secondary role in public services, limiting the effectiveness of preventive actions. This article discusses the main causes of edentulism in Brazil, highlighting the need for more integrated public policies, effective educational strategies, and the use of innovative technologies as key tools to reverse this situation and promote quality of life for the population.
