Eco-Engineered Marine Mattresses for Subsea Pipeline Protection and Biodiversity Enhancement

Abstract Subsea pipelines are essential for transporting crude oil and natural gas from extraction sites to handling, storage, and processing facilities. Unintentional pipeline free-spanning, hydrodynamic forces, and direct impacts, however, are common threats of pipeline failure that require careful design considerations. Beyond the engineering requirements for ensuring pipeline stabilization and protection, environmental regulatory requirements present additional design challenges. In this context, to bridge the gap between engineering and environmental constraints, innovative marine concrete technologies provide new opportunities. Eco-engineered marine mattresses have been proven to simultaneously achieve structural integrity, hydraulic stability, and biodiversity enhancement when applied and evaluated in the context of subsea pipeline and cable protection. Scientific-based eco-engineering technologies designed to accomplish multiple objectives and developed in accordance with common engineering standards are particularly useful to practicing engineers, permitting agencies, and oil and gas corporations seeking improved, cost-effective, and sustainable alternative methods for pipeline protection.
