The Role of the Oil & Gas Industry in Carbon Sequestration Management in Europe
Abstract Carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies are essential for hard-to-abate sectors, such as steel, cement, and the oil and gas (O&G) industry. Efficient CO2 transportation infrastructure and safe geological storage are critical for large-scale implementation. This paper reveals the key role of the O&G industry in managing and advancing CCS projects across Europe. A review of 62 CCS projects in the EU and UK shows that over 30 are directly supported by O&G companies. These companies apply their expertise in subsurface engineering and infrastructure to support decarbonization. The paper highlights key technologies, challenges, and opportunities associated with carbon sequestration management, along with case studies from major industry players and regional initiatives.
