Benefits on implementing an automation testing tool based on IEC61850

The transition to digital substations and the adoption of the IEC 61850 standard brings new challenges and opportunities for testing and validation of electrical protections. The tools based on this standard which are available in the market, enable partial automation of testing, expediting equipment validation, without eliminating the need for deep knowledge of IEC 61850 protocols. This paper introduces a novel tool designed to fully automate validation processes, while simplifying result interpretation. The tool connects to multiple devices via the MMS protocol, evaluates report messages, monitors GOOSE messages, and integrates with injection device APIs for automated tests. This approach significantly reduces OPEX by enabling testing by operators with minimal IEC 61850 knowledge, streamlining testing time, and offering real-time visualization of results. The use of this tool in laboratories can provide clear CAPEX and OPEX benefits, improving efficiency and reliability in validation processes.
