The modern DSO – addressing challenges and opportunities to meet tomorrows' expectations
The accelerating push for global decarbonization is driving a profound transformation across economies. As sectors undergo rapid electrification and the generation mix shifts toward renewables, the electrical grid faces unprecedented pressure to evolve. Beyond reliability and security, the grid must now deliver adaptability, resilience, equitable access, and affordability—key expectations of the modern energy system. This paper identifies six critical focus areas—or "bets"—that will shape the future of the grid. These insights are based on research into European trends, literature reviews, and collaborative workshops with internal stakeholders and industry peers. Each of these bets highlights essential transformations the grid must undertake to remain relevant and effective in the face of accelerating change. However, these challenges extend far beyond technology. They demand a comprehensive, multi-faceted approach that addresses technical, business, financial, regulatory, legal, and societal questions. Grid companies are at the heart of the electrification revolution, and failure to adapt would have severe consequences for society, the economy, and global climate goals. This paper not only explores these key focus areas but also raises critical questions that the industry as a whole must address and answer. Successfully navigating this transformation will require collaboration, innovation, and bold decision-making to ensure grid companies are resilient, future-proof, and able to meet the demands of a cleaner, electrified future.
